Australian Tea tree oil (ATTO), or melaleuca oil, is an essential oil. It is refined from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia, which is native to Southeast Queensland and the Northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Therapeutic Properties:
Many research studies have shown Tea Tree Oil’s efficacy against a wide range of bacteria and fungi. Julia Lawless summarizes the actions of Tea Tree Oil as “Anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, balsamic, cicatrizant, diaphoretic, expectorant, fungicidal, immuno-stimulant, parsiticide, vulnerary” (The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils). Given the volumes of research and accompanying results it is very difficult to summarize the antimicrobial properties of this wonderful essential oil.
However, of particular note is Tea Tree Oil’s effectiveness in the treatment of acne. In 1990 researchers compared M. alternifolia to conventional acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide. They concluded that although the M. alternifolia was initially slower to act, it had fewer side effects when compared to the benzoyl peroxide lotion.
Research has also shown Tea Tree Oil’s effectiveness against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This is a very exciting potential for Tea Tree Oil given the issues of MRSA carriage in public buildings such as hospitals and prisons.
